" So-Called Reservation ! "
Reservation system in India
Your perspective depends upon whether you are benefiting from this reservation
system or losing from it. Reservation based on caste is a blunt instrument, but it is
needed in the absence of alternatives built by the government. Our government
should ideally build policies to include people from all castes of society in jobs and
education.

There is nothing wrong with the concept of reservation. The objective behind it
was positive discrimination. And in democracy it’s a vital tool to promote
inclusion and overall well- being. Imagine someone belonging to a family that has
been economically and educationally discriminated, how can that individual claim
equal opportunity until state does not support him. For he can’t afford an
education, grooming, environment that someone living in a well to do family can.

Reservation was established in our educational institutes and government jobs by our first
government led by Pt Nehru who believed in a Socialistic India with equal
distribution of resources and opportunities for all. It was provided to the most
backward classes mainly the tribals and adivasis who came to be known as SC and
ST. It really helped in the beginning as these sections were the most deprived and
needed these opportunities to improve on the social scale. It was to be reviewed
at the end of 10 years whether some caste or tribes by the virtue of their
improved status could be pulled back from the SC and ST.
As I belong to general category, not obtaining the rewards from the government
based on the caste considers it as a bad thing in India. It’s not like I am against the
reservation system of India. I am in favour of it but only for those who badly need,
not for all who come in lower caste.Everything has its own negative and positive
effects or say, advantages and disadvantages. But we must keep in mind that as
time changes, we must also transform ourselves, otherwise we are bound to face
problems created by none other than ourselves. Now this reservation policy has
no good effect. Instead it creates a sense of discrimination among people. Every
time we need to fill government or education related form, one entry is “which caste or which religion or minority group are you from?”. If India desires to
progress then everyone should be taken together as a single unit, not in
segments.
The general category student (including me) would say that the biggest harm of
reservation is the loss of opportunity. 99% of us would have been at a better
college or would have been studying a discipline of our choice, if not for
reservation. Like seats in colleges, even 50% of the government jobs are reserved.
“Clause 2 of Article 16 lays down that no citizen on the grounds of religion, race,
caste, sex, descent, place of birth, residence or any of them be discriminated in
respect of any employment or office under the state”.
Also from time to time such reforms or laws must be evaluated by experts and
their impact on the development of under privileged and overall society must be
assessed. Also, calculate the way these are changing the per capita income,
number of people below poverty line etc.
Politicians should stop using reservation system as a gimmick to have a permanent vote bank. Education should not be a part of politics. Instead nurture the saplings right from childhood for their bright future and then there won’t be any need of so-called reservation system in India.
